The college is named after Lady Marie Jane Kinnaird, a co-founder of the YWCA and a renowned philanthropist of her time. Founded in 1913 by the Zenana Bible and Medical Mission, the college moved to its current campus on Jail Road in 1926, where it has grown into a 20-acre (81,000 m2) campus.
