SKMCH&RC is the largest tertiary care hospital in Pakistan and the first project of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, which is a charitable organization established under the British Indian Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The Hospital was founded by the current Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, who is a former cricketer-turned-politician.

The idea to build the hospital came after his mother, Ms. Shaukat Khanum, was diagnosed with cancer in 1985, and during her illness, he saw the need for special cancer treatment for poor patients in Pakistani hospitals.
